I have some exciting news: I cut my hair off! This decision didn’t come easily, but life sometimes nudges us in unexpected ways. Here’s the backstory behind this significant yet liberating change.

The Catalyst for Change: A Medical Necessity

The journey began with a catheter inserted in my chest for dialysis, which runs up my neck and down to my heart. Although it’s a temporary solution, finding a permanent replacement could take up to three months. Here’s the catch: I can’t get the catheter wet, as doing so could lead to severe, potentially life-threatening complications.

To prevent water exposure, I must cover the catheter with a large bandage every time I bathe. However, even water on the bandage is risky. This presented a significant challenge when it came to washing my hair.

Struggle of Long Hair Maintenance

Managing long hair with these restrictions was extremely challenging. Every time I washed it, I had to bring it carefully forward to avoid any water contact with the catheter. This process was not just labor-intensive but also stressful. My go-to solution? A messy bun, which I was growing increasingly tired of.

The Decision: A Pixie Cut For Convenience and Style

Inspired by my mom’s previous experience, I decided to embrace a pixie cut. Guess what? I love it! It’s been nearly a decade since I last had a pixie, and I’m thrilled to rediscover this style. Not only is it easier to maintain, but it also gives me a polished look, unlike the messy bun I was becoming frustrated with.

Reflecting on the Change

Cutting my hair wasn’t solely about medical advice; it was about reclaiming control, style, and convenience.

So, that’s the story behind my new pixie cut! I hope my experience inspires you to make a decision that brings ease and joy into your life. Thanks for sharing this journey with me. Until next time, good night everyone!

I’m currently seeking a kidney donor and I’m working with an organization called DOVE to help facilitate the experience.
